Although Grand County has experienced several inches of new snow in the last several days, SolVista Basin will close Sunday, March 29, as planned.

Since operations began as SolVista Basin around 10 years ago, the ski area typically opens the second week of December and closes the last weekend in March ” the first week of April at the latest.

Charlie Mayfield, vice president of operations, said the decision is usually based on snow conditions, but also takes into consideration spring break schedules and estimates on business levels. He said the season has been “OK, (but) not great,” adding that business hasn’t been as bad as he has heard it has been at other ski areas this year. Official individual skier visits will be published on http://www.coloradoski.com by this summer.

This winter Granby Ranch made several new improvements to the ski area and have more in line for this summer. The base lodge got a makeover and its restaurant was able to expand its operation hours to seven days a week for lunch and dinner. Night skiing this winter also “proved very popular,” as well as the addition of lift-serviced tubing.

Plans are in the works to reopen the area for biking starting June 5, with downhill bike trails enhanced last summer and new trails in place by the end of May. SolVista has also announced it will host the U.S.A. Cycling’s Mountain Bike National Championships in July. Chairlifts will also be in operation this summer for hiking and general sightseeing.
