Thanks to the generosity of the Friends of Grand County Library, the Grand County Library District brought vibrant energy to its annual Summer Library Program, themed “Color Our World.” With events spanning all five library branches, the program offered a kaleidoscope of activities with a mix of performances, educational activities, and community engagement for children, teens and families.

The festivities began in mid-June with kickoff celebrations featuring Kona Ice, live entertainment, and free books for youth from birth to age 18 years. The program’s goal was to inspire a love of reading and creativity while helping prevent summer learning loss.

Among the most popular performers was Denise Gard, whose storytelling sessions featured her charming therapy dogs, Kira and Joey. Gard’s interactive shows blended humor, heart, and canine companionship, delighting audiences of all ages.

The Grand County Wildfire Council hosted engaging presentations on fire safety and environmental awareness, helping families understand the importance of protecting Colorado’s natural landscapes.

Musician and educator Dino O’Dell energized young audiences with his signature blend of music and storytelling about the seven continents. His lively performances encouraged imagination and participation, making learning fun and memorable.

The libraries also hosted a Grand Storytime Celebration, where families gathered at Polhamus Park for stories, songs, and a foam party. This event emphasized the joy of shared stories and the importance of early literacy, thanks to Grand Fire who provided a fire truck, firefighters, and plenty of water for hosing off the foam.

Teens enjoyed a thrilling Paintball Party at Winter Park Adventure Quest, offering a unique opportunity for outdoor fun and team building. This event was part of the Library’s commitment to providing engaging, age-appropriate programming for older youth.

Meghan Casey’s Rocky Mountain Puppets returned with a new show titled “Prism Break,” combining puppetry, comedy, and colorful storytelling. Casey’s performances added theatrical flair and were a hit with both children and adults.

On August 5, Michael Albert, a nationally recognized Modern Pop Artist, led two hands-on collage art workshops. Participants created vibrant artworks using colorful recycled consumer boxes, blending creativity with environmental consciousness.

Beyond performances, the program featured STEAM activities, scavenger hunts, collaborative art projects, community picnics, and access to cultural venues through Access Grand, including the Butterfly Pavilion and Denver Firefighter Museum.

We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to Winter Park Resort, YMCA of the Rockies, and Country Ace Hardware in Granby for donating youth and Teen completion prizes once again this year. Special thanks also go out to the many local business owners and program volunteers who shared their time, talents, and goods to help make the summer library program a huge success.

With its colorful themes and diverse offerings, the Summer Library Program proved once again that libraries are more than just places for books—they are vibrant hubs of imagination, learning, and community connection.
