Residents of the Grand Lake Fire Protection District voted to approve Ballot Issue 6A on Nov. 4, authorizing a modest property tax increase to help cover rising operational costs. 54.7% voted in favor of the measure

The measure passed with 864 votes for it and 715 against the plan to raise the district’s mill levy. The rate will increase from 11.63 mills to 13 mills. District officials say the change will provide critical funding as expenses continue to climb by 15% to 20% annually, while tax collections have not kept pace—even as property values rise.

What is a mill?
A mill represents $1 in tax for every $1,000 of a property’s assessed value. With the approved increase, the district will collect a larger share of property taxes to maintain emergency services.

For example, a home assessed at $500,000 would pay:

  • At 11.63 mills: $5,815 annually
  • At 13 mills: $6,500 annually

Officials say the additional revenue will help sustain staffing, equipment, and emergency response capabilities for the growing community.
