Grand Lake skijoring draws crowd of 20,000 onlookers, organizers say

A bright, 40-degree afternoon in Grand Lake seemed to be the antidote to dreary winter blues on Saturday, Feb. 28. The streets were packed shoulder to shoulder, with cars backed up to U.S. Highway 40 to find a parking spot. The word got out, and crowds flocked to the second annual skijoring event between Hancock and Vine Streets.
This year also brought upgrades, organizers said. On the main stage, a group of Western-clad announcers spoke to the lively crowd, which responded with cheers upon hearing that this year’s event had more vendor tents, sponsors and organizers, all of which drew in 10,000 more spectators than last year’s audience of 10,000.
The skijoring event started on Feb. 27 and will wrap up on March 1, marking a new tradition and one of Grand Lake’s biggest winter events.
Organizers also recognized the effort that went into creating the spectacle. This year, the Grand Lake Board of Trustees purchased a snowmaker to build enough snow for skiers to race on. Due to enhanced snowmaking efforts, the skijoring event was able to happen as scheduled, despite a drastically low-snow year.
