On July 12, an historic 1947 Denver & Salt Lake Railway caboose made a journey from Gore Pass to Grand County. This all-steel beauty — the last D&SL caboose ever built for that railway — was carefully placed by a crane on the tracks at Moffat Road Railroad Museum in Granby.
In 1947, the day after it first entered the D&SL yard in 1947, Denver & Rio Grande Western bought D&SL and repainted the caboose in their own livery, or individual logo.
Caboose #01390 left Gore Pass at 7:30 a.m. on July 12 and arrived at the museum before noon. The caboose weighs 40,000 pounds. The trucks, which serve as the wheels and axles, weigh 5000 pounds each, according to Dave Naples, the executive director and founder of the museum.
The caboose was a generous donation from Marvin and Carol McCall. Marvin worked for the Denver & Rio Grande Western railway for 40 years. Part of that time was as foreman of its car shop at Burnham Rail Yard in Denver where their railroad cars were built. The Union Pacific bought D&RG in 1983.
“He has a deep love for rail history and wanted to see this caboose preserved for future generations,” stated a press release from the rail museum.
The museum now houses two of the the only three known Denver & Salt Lake Railway cabooses in existence.
Although the caboose’s steel exterior has seen better days, the museum plans to sandblast and repaint it in its classic black with white lettering. So far, it’s about 75% restored inside.
