GRANBY — The Middle Park Health Granby Campus emergency department and supporting services will open at 6 p.m. MDT Monday, Oct. 12. Outpatient services will resume during regular business hours Tuesday, Oct. 13.

The incident began Saturday, Oct. 10, while the emergency department was open. During routine boiler maintenance, staff noticed an unusual odor. Middle Park Health Director of Community Relations Tiffany Freitag said the maintenance affected the calcium buildup of the hospital’s boiler, causing the odor to spread through parts of the hospital. The hospital suspended operations as a precaution.

The campus closed again on Sunday night after the odor returned. The entire campus remained closed throughout Monday while staff waited for an all-clear and continued flushing the boiler to reduce residual calcium buildup. Freitag said the event was unprecedented in Middle Park Health History, although calcium buildup is common with boilers.

No patients experienced any further health issues due to the odor. Some staff experienced mild irritation, but not considered hazardous.

Although Granby is Middle Park Health’s main campus, the Fraser and Kremmling campuses were able to accept patients without being overwhelmed. Middle Park Health thanked its community partners — including Grand County EMS, Grand Fire, the Sheriff’s Office, the Granby Police Department — as well as its own staff, for their flexibility and quick response.
