A crowd gathered in the Middle Park High School gym to cheer on volleyball players from the Rocky Mountain Region League on Jan. 19.

After decades of effort, Grand County’s 8058 Peak Volleyball Club hosted its first tournament for the region, which includes teams from across Colorado and Wyoming. Six teams arrived at the high school in Granby to compete in the Power 1 tournament.

“It was a very successful day,” 8058 Peak President Jennifer Bauckman said. “Doors opened at 7 a.m., and within 30 minutes, we had 150 people filling the commons and both gyms.”

Two of the directors of the Rocky Mountain Region League attended to help teach the Granby coaches the ropes for hosting a tournament.

One of 8058 Peak’s home teams, U14-1, won the tournament. The team also got first place in point ratios out of the 95 teams that competed that day across Colorado, Bauckman said. The team is led by varsity coaches Kelly Friesen and Claire Luque.

This season, 8058 Peak athletes will compete in 33 out-of-county tournaments. At the end of February, 22 athletes will travel to Florida to compete in a national qualifier with 860 teams in the nation.
