A major transformation is underway on Park Avenue in Grand Lake as the long‑planned Creative District housing project takes shape. A new 3,000‑square‑foot building is rising where an overflow parking lot once sat, and nine prefabricated housing units have arrived nearby, ready to be placed on permanent foundations

The vision for the project began in 2018 and supports intergenerational learning, creative workforce development and rural revitalization. It will also address a need for year-round housing, commercial space and dedicated Grand Lake Creative District space.

To share updates and answer questions, the town and project leaders recently hosted several information sessions which included a happy hour, Q&A over coffee and a presentation held Monday evening. The presentation discussed how the units have been designed for creatives, educators and people who want to be part of Grand Lakes cultural fabric.

Town Manager Steve Kudron and Grand County Economic Development Coordinator DiAnn Butler, the explained the layouts of all nine units in detail, noting functionality and affordability. All but one will have a working studio facing the boardwalk with layouts ideal for one person, a couple or small family. Kudron pointed out the shared courtyard and community firepit

“That’s sure to be a happening area, displaying the vibrancy of our community year-round,” he said.

Applicants earning 80–140% of the area median income for Grand County are eligible to apply. When candidates are equally qualified, preference may be given to those interested in offering classes or workshops at the adjacent makerspace. This allows residents to earn income both from their studio work and through Rocky Mountain Folk School, another Creative District member.

Folk School and Creative District President Alan Walker showed his excitement as he spoke of the progress that’s been made on both projects, and answered questions for attendees regarding storage space for materials and equipment among other topics.

Sheena Darland from the Grand County Housing Authority spoke briefly about screenings and lease terms. Preapplication and employment Verification which can be found on the Town of Grand Lake website

The presentation closed with the three ways you can apply for the new space to create housing units. These include picking up a hard copy at the Grand Lake Town Hall front desk or Grand County Housing Authority Office, downloading the application at Co.grand.co.us/421/Housing-Authority, or filling it out online at Co/grand.co/Housing-Authority. Applications will be accepted starting Monday March 16 at 8 a.m. and will close Monday March 23 at 11:59 a.m.
