The text came at 6:18 p.m. A photographer friend from Granby told me the aurora borealis was happening right now.

“Go outside and look north,” she said. “You can faintly see it with your naked eye. It’s the first time we’ve been able to see the red that I know of. It’s normally just white and green.”

Walking through the forests of northern Grand County, I peered through tall pines as I ascended a nearby hill. Vaguely above the horizon, I could just make out a glowing tint. I snapped a couple shots with my phone and there it was, a purply-red high shimmering like the stroke of a hypercolor paintbrush.

As I reached the high point of the hill, it became brighter … and brighter. Soon, I could see it with my naked eye — glowing reds and pinks, indigos and oranges splashed with streaks of green and gold, shifting in time with the glimmering stars.

From this place, the world seemed to hang suspended in a magical moment that lasted for hours. I could see it all with my own two eyes.
