James M. Sheehan (73) of Monticello, IA passed away June 10, 2024 in Iowa City, IA following an eight year battle with Pulmonary Fibrosis. James (Jim) was born in Dubuque, Iowa to Betty (Revenig) and Elmer Sheehan and grew up around Zwingle with his five siblings. He had many stories about going to school in a one room schoolhouse, playing in the barn and teasing his siblings where he earned the nickname “the little devil”. Jim attended Truman State University in Kirksville, MO and earned a degree in Political Science in 1973. Shortly after graduation, he married Connie McNeece and they settled in Missouri and welcomed two children, Courtney and Wes Sheehan. In 1981, Jim and family moved to Northern Colorado where he dedicated his life to working in public service with the Weld County Housing Authority. He made many lifelong friends in Greeley, playing beach volleyball at the New Plantation, going out to the FAC club, riding horses, and growing a large garden. Brother Bob lived nearby and they spent many weekends barbequing and enjoying the Colorado outdoors with their families. After Jim’s divorce, he moved to Grand Lake where the wildlife was literally at his back door, including a bear that liked to break into his garage and look through his living room window. He loved living in Grand County and worked at the Grand County Housing Authority until he retired. He enjoyed the 40 years living in Colorado and spent as much time as he could hiking, skiing and fishing in the mountains. He loved brewing homemade beer, growing tomatoes and riding his Rzr around the gravel roads.
Shortly before his death, he relocated to Iowa to be near his siblings, nieces and nephews. They were an active part of his everyday life and allowed him to stay in his home when he became ill.
He is survived by his daughter Courtney (Luke) Pospisil of Littleton, CO, son Wes (Lindsay) Sheehan of Kansas City, MO, granddaughters Sarah and Madeline Pospisil of Littleton, CO, his siblings: Robert (Betty) Sheehan of Maricopa, AZ, Thomas Sheehan of Sherrill, IA, Patty (Kenny) Jaeger of Cascade, IA, Linda Sheehan of Sherrill, IA, Daniel (Jenny) Sheehan, Dubuque, IA, and many nieces and nephews.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents Elmer and Betty Sheehan and grandmother Amelia Mae Jellison, and brother in law Dick Strickland. The family would like to thank the caring nurses and doctors at University of Iowa Hospital.
A celebration of life will be planned at a later date.
