Rocky Mountain National Park announced Tuesday its annual closures are in effect in to Lumpy Ridge, a popular rock climbing and hiking area, until July 31 during the raptor nesting season.
The closures prevent the disturbance of nesting raptors such as golden eagles and peregrine falcons. Depending on the length of the nesting season, the closures may be extended or rescinded earlier than July 31, according to a Feb. 17 press release from the park.
Formations closed in the Lumpy Ridge area, located on the east side near the town of Estes Park, include the Book, Bookmark, Bookmark Pinnacle, Left Book, Twin Owls, Rock One, Thunder Buttress, the Needle and the Parish. Closures include the named rock formations on all sides, trails around the base, all climbing routes, outcroppings, cliffs, faces, ascent and descent routes, according to the release.
Access trails near the closed formations remain open to hikers and climbers but may be subject to closure, according to the release.
