The Summit County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of a skier at Breckenridge Ski Resort that occurred Wednesday, March 11.
Deputies responded to the resort after receiving a report around 1:30 p.m. that CPR was in progress following a skier crash. A male skier, visiting from out of state, had crashed in the Lake Chutes, a double-black diamond, hike-to area on Peak 8.
The Sheriff’s Office found in its initial investigation that the skier was wearing a helmet and was alone when he fell. No other skiers or riders were involved in the crash.
A bystander contacted Breckenridge Ski Patrol after witnessing the crash and ski patrol responded, provided medical care and transported the skier to the Peak 8 first aid room, where he was pronounced dead, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
The investigation into the death is ongoing, and details may change.
“Our mountain community feels these losses deeply,” said Sheriff Jaime FitzSimons in a news release. “We extend our sincere condolences to the skier’s family and loved ones during this difficult time.”
The Summit County Coroner’s Office will release the individual’s identity at a later time and is responsible for determining the official cause and manner of death.
