GRAND LAKE — A 50-year-old Ontario, Canada, man was arrested Tuesday following an assault at the Grand Lake Community Center.

The Grand County Communications Center received a report of the assault at approximately 5:15 a.m. at 301 Marina Drive. According to investigators, the victim had arrived at the center for a morning workout and encountered a man and his dog sleeping in an unauthorized area of the building. A physical confrontation occurred after the victim informed the man that sleeping in that area was not permitted. The victim sustained injuries during the incident.

The suspect fled the scene before deputies arrived. Following a search of the surrounding area by the Grand County Sheriff’s Office, a K9 team, and Rocky Mountain National Park Rangers, authorities located and apprehended Nicholas Torok at the Kawuneeche Visitor Center in Rocky Mountain National Park.

Torok was transported to the Grand County Jail and booked on charges of third-degree assault, a class 1 misdemeanor, and crime against an at-risk adult, a class 6 felony.

“While no community is entirely immune from crime, residents and visitors can be confident that public safety remains a top priority,” Grand Lake Town Manager Steve Kudron said, adding that the community is “in good hands” following the swift response from law enforcement.

Further inquiries are being directed to the 14th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.
