Two Grand County dude ranches will be featured in an upcoming Wyoming PBS documentary exploring the heritage and future of Western ranching.

“Call of the West,” an hour-long film produced for Wyoming PBS by Alpheus Media, premieres at 7 p.m. MST on Thursday, Feb. 19, with a digital debut on the Wyoming PBS YouTube channel, according to a Feb. 5 press release from the station.

Grand County’s Bar Lazy J Ranch in Parshall and Drowsy Water Ranch in Granby are among several ranches featured in the documentary, which explores the culture and spirit of the American West and highlights the role of local ranches in preserving that legacy, Wyoming PBS spokesperson Christina George said.

Set against sweeping Western landscapes, the film follows ranch operators as they balance hospitality, heritage and financial realities in an increasingly competitive tourism market.

The YouTube premiere marks the first time the network has premiered an original documentary on a digital platform before its television broadcast and is part of an effort to reach broader audiences, according to the release

“Premiering ‘Call of the West’ on YouTube allows us to continue to reach audiences statewide and nationwide with free educational content wherever they are,” Wyoming PBS CEO Joanna Kail said in the release.

The documentary recently held its world premiere at the Dude Ranchers’ Association Centennial Convention in Billings, Mont., a place where dude ranching is “deeply woven” into the rural cultural fabric, Kail said.

Following the Feb. 19 premiere, “Call of the West” will remain available for on-demand streaming on the Wyoming PBS YouTube channel and will air on the Wyoming PBS television channel at a later date.
