Letter to the editor: Commissioners, it’s time to level up fire restrictions

Hey Grand County commissioners, no matter how it started, we have fire! It is a good thing at that your special meeting on Aug. 7, you voted unanimously to declare an emergency alarm, due to the Windy Gap Fire. I Zoomed the meeting just in time to learn of the vote. I stayed on for the discussion about our county fire danger level which is still at one — only — as of Aug. 15.

A local fire rep reported that the fire was caused by lightning and nothing could have been done to prevent it. Ergo, the level should remain at one. Hey guys, we have fire! Conditions are uber-ripe for more. With these temperatures and winds, even level two may not be enough.

I Zoom-chatted my concerns and I’m not sure County Commissioner Ed Raegner got my words, but after the commissioners unanimous vote to remain at level one, he did caution that they had just released an emergency warning and other nearby counties were at level two or about to be, too.

I do hope that, by the time people read this letter, our head honchos will have reversed their votes and bumped up the level and warnings.
