Letter to the editor: Resist harmful government actions at No Kings rally
Fraser Valley
Hear ye! Hear ye!
Come, proclaim support with your fellow folk for the restoration of our democratic values and processes. No Kings 2.0 rally will take place from 2 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, October 18 at the Rendezvous Event Center in Winter Park.
Along with several local notables, the honorable Julie McCluskie, our state representative and speaker of the house, will be addressing the hordes. Bring your marching shoes, your signs and your ceaseless support for our seriously threatened constitution which is being suspended by our current ruler.
President Trump and his cronies have been maliciously gutting our government without regard to the health and well-being of our citizens, especially the most vulnerable. This includes children, seniors and
hard-working families and individuals, as well as employees of critical departments.
For example, the EPA had to send home 89% of their workers and the Department of Education is losing 87% while Homeland Security has furloughed only 5%. Meanwhile, the ICE budget has been expanded to $75 billion and legal, law-abiding immigrants in the midst of due process (along with legal citizens) are being plucked, gestapo-like, off the streets, in schools, churches and grocery store, detained and deported without due process.
And Trump, with his abuse of the executive order, has shut down the Office of Detention Oversight, which inspects detention centers to make sure they comply with federal standards for the safe and humane treatment of migrants. So much cruelty and destruction, all in the name of saving taxes for billionaires.
Other harmful executive orders include the galling, illegal and needless sending of the National Guard into blue states/cities without the consent of their governors; ending birthright citizenship; withdrawing
from the World Health Organization and the Paris Climate Agreement; shutting down Voice of America; ending support for NPR and PBS; revitalization of the coal industry and, of course, all those tariffs.
Please wear yellow to the rally for sunny warmth and optimism, as requested by the organizers. Power to the People!
