Update, July 19: The downed line was caused by a dump truck, according to Mountain Parks Electric. The downed line was neutral, however when it was hit, the fuse on the pole was also pulled away from the pole, which caused some lights in Granby to briefly go out.

On Thursday, July 18, following a thunderstorm in Granby, a downed power line closed U.S. Highway 40 near City Market to traffic while Mountain Parks Electric crews worked to repair the line. The area was shut down for the line worker’s safety, and traffic was redirected by the Granby Police Department.

It is still unknown whether the line was downed by lightning or a vehicle, according to Aaron Street with Mountain Parks Electric.

There are also no current outages as a result of the downed line. However, some buildings in Granby did experience brief outages, including the Sky-Hi News office and Mountain Parks Electric office. It is unknown whether the two incidents are related.

The highway was reopened to motorists around 3 p.m.
