The Colorado Department of Transportation is doing rockfall mitigation work in Byers Canyon on U.S. Highway 40 near Hot Sulphur Springs this week.

Motorists should expect 20-minute traffic holds from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. through Thursday, Aug. 21.

Once completed, the mitigation will help prevent rocks from falling onto the highway.

In March, a rockslide in the canyon caused significant damage to the roadway, causing the highway to close. It was patched the same day, and a more permanent fix is planned for this section of road.
