Big Trout Brewing Company took home a gold medal from the Colorado State Fair Beer Competition, held May 18 at the fairgrounds in Pueblo.

The Winter Park-based brewery owned by Tom and Emily Caldwell earned first for its No. 9 Amber Lager.

Named in honor of hockey legend, Gordie Howe, this fan favorite is known for its smooth, malty profile with a perfectly crisp finish.

Big Trout competed in the International lager/Czech lager category, winning against seven other brews. At the state fair beer competition, judges evaluate beers based on aroma, appearance, flavor and overall impression

“This achievement marks the third consecutive year that Big Trout has been recognized at this prestigious event, solidifying its reputation as a rising star in Colorado’s thriving craft beer scene,” the brewery stated in the release.

Three years —  three medals, with 2025 being Big Trout’s first gold, to demonstrate the brewery’s dedication to high-quality local brewing.

The most recent accolade comes on the heels of the company’s five-year anniversary. The family-run affair opened in Cooper Creek Square in 2020. The Caldwells are frequently seen at events around the community and have given back through fundraisers throughout the years.

Big Trout Brewing Company stated it has “consistently earned awards for its exceptional brews” since entering the state competition in 2023. Pictured: Emily and Tom Caldwell, Big Trout’s owners, during a 2024 beer fest at Winter Park Resort.

Big Trout stated that in 2023, it took home a silver medal for its Alpine Lake IPA, “a bold and refreshing beer that has become a favorite among IPA enthusiasts.”

In 2024, the Hickory Hill Raspberry Wheat earned a bronze medal, “celebrating its perfect balance,” the brewery stated.

“We are thrilled and honored to have received recognition for our beers three years in a row,” stated Emily Caldwell, in the release. “We’re excited to keep pushing boundaries and delivering beers that our community loves.”
