Since the Sept. 10 assassination of conservative Christian activist Charlie Kirk, leader of Turning Point USA, community members across the nation have come together to create local chapters of the nonprofit he founded in 2012.

In fact, Grand County is moving towards the formation of its own Turning Point USA chapter this month. 15-year-old Granby resident Sego Krempin has collaborated with other local teens to advocate for the chapter. Krempin is also the vice president of the Laramie, Wyoming chapter.

“We’re still waiting for final approval on the chapter; the (TPUSA staff) are really busy right now since they’re getting requests for so many new chapters, so it’s taking awhile,” said Krempin.

She added that she’s in conversations with Lena Branch, the Colorado field representative for Turning Point USA, to get the Grand County chapter officially recognized.

A second local vigil for Kirk

On Oct. 14, Krempin and her mother, Tish Linke-Krempin, are hoping to host a grand opening of this chapter to coincide with a second Grand County vigil to honor what would have been Kirk’s 32nd birthday.

The first Grand County vigil for Kirk was held on Sept. 18, a week after Kirk’s assassination during a speaking engagement at Utah Valley University.

That night, over 100 people gathered for prayers and hymns, shared memories and lit candles. This event will be held at the same location — a property Linke owns nearby the stoplight at 80 East Agate Ave., beginning at 6 p.m.

According to Turning Point USA, as of Oct. 8., the organization has received more than 37,000 inquiries from people wanting to start new campus chapters. The nonprofit states that it currently has 900 college chapters and about 1,200 high school chapters.

Kirk left behind two children and his wife, Erika Kirk, who is now CEO and chair of the board at Turning Point USA. The FBI identified the murder suspect as 22-year-old Tyler Robinson who is being held on multiple charges at Utah County Jail in Spanish Fork, Utah.

People sang Christian hymns and read prayers from the Bible, including the Book of Psalms at the vigil for Charlie Kirk on Sept. 18 in Granby.
