Grand County was home to the coldest places in Colorado last night
Low temperatures were recorded across Grand County this weekend as it was hit with a strong cold front that transported Arctic air into the mountains. The National Weather Service Office in Boulder reported on social media that the Fraser Flats, south of Tabernash, hit a low of minus 44 Monday night.
Weather enthusiast JP Connick said the reason Tabernash gets so cold during the nighttime can be explained by the fundamental rule that cold air is more dense than warm air. When cold air from mountain peaks flow into valleys and basins, this cool air ends up pooling in the lowest area, which is where Tabernash sits.
In addition to Tabernash, there were other notable cold spots in Grand County: The Harbison Meadow area near Grand Lake reached minus 40 by Tuesday morning, while the town of Granby reached minus 37.
