Since 1999, Habit for Humanity Grand County has provided housing for local residents. On Thursday, the group is ready to dedicate its first completed home in the past year and a half.

This will be Habitat’s 16th home built in Grand County. A benediction is scheduled for Sept. 18 at 210 E. Nevava Street. in Hot Sulphur Springs within the neighborhood where they’ve been several other homes.

Habitat volunteers began building House No. 16 in fall 2024 and plan to close the sale of the property to homeowner Leanne H. There will be lunch and a presentation by the Grand Quilters. The event lasts from 2-3:30 p.m.

“The Quilt Presentation Ceremony is one of the most joyful moments of the Habitat home-building process in Grand County,” Habitat Board President Sallie Arnold stated in a news release from the nonprofit.

Each member of the new homeowner’s family will be presented with a handmade quilt stitched by local quilters as a welcome gift and celebration of their new home.

“We’ve done this for many Habitat houses in Grand County,” said Grand Quilters spokesperson Betsy deVries. “We work together as a team to create these custom quilts for each member of the family, and it’s a privilege to present them to the new homeowners.”

Habitat’s mission is to make home ownership possible for members of the Grand County community who otherwise might never get the chance — and who are willing to invest their own time and effort for the opportunity.

Selected homeowners typically help build their homes, putting in their own sweat equity. They work alongside a dedicated crew of contractors, skilled framers, laborers and many others who lend a helping hand.

Homes are sold at market value, but monthly mortgage payments are capped at no more than 30% of the household’s gross monthly income.

With the 16th home now complete, Habitat’s board, volunteers and contractors are working on their next project — multifamily units in Granby.

In 2024, Habitat received $1.6 million from the Colorado Housing and Finance Authority and the state Office of Economic Development and International Trade. This generous forgivable loan will allow the nonprofit to build an estimated 20 affordable housing units on a 2.68-acre property in Granby.

They will be guided by contractor George Davis of Maple Street Builders in Hot Sulphur Springs and their full-time staff Construction Manager Marc Gumnic.

“In recent months we have benefited from grants and gift-in-kind totaling $91,500.00 awarded by the Grand Foundation, Colorado Housing and Finance Authority, Habitat for Humanity International, Eck Family Foundation, El Pomar, Colorado Department of Housing, Habitat Colorado and many others,” Habitat stated.

Habitat will start to build out the Granby project in spring 2026, and offer potential homeowner applications to Grand County residents.
