Over 100 children raced on cross-country skis at Snow Mountain Ranch on Feb. 22. The Nordic skiing races took place on 1K, 2.5K or 5K tracks in the “Barnelopet,” or children’s race.
The event has its roots in Norwegian history. Pamela Hanson, of Grand County’s Sons of Norway group, told Sky-Hi News that each child earned “a medal, a flag and lots of encouragement for finishing the non-timed events.”
Snow Mountain Ranch has sponsored the Barnelopet for more than 10 years. The Colorado Sons of Norway lodges also support the event.
“The noncompetitive events introduce newer skiers under the age of 17 to Nordic cross-country skiing, and encourage them to try a new, healthy outdoor activity by providing free lessons, equipment, trail passes and lunch,” Hanson wrote.
She thanked all the volunteers who served as registrars, food preparers and trail marshals. She also thanked the ski instructors who helped “the children have fun and learn new skills.”
