Local poetry: Moved Mountains

Falls leaves abound on Berthoud Pass on the morning of Sept. 17.
Sean McAlindin/Sky-Hi News

The fall being beneath and ahead
Coming in leaving
Leaves only branches, the thought broken
Glances flashy bright color

The background a cold blue and intense light

Such intense sun, here, so close it feels like warmth
while the air and sky are heavy sinking frozen
and frigid. Tricked us outside
shivering, exited us, entering cutting chill

Scenery, engulfed us jagged and close

Thin air tricks distance, looks insignificant
Do-able, even
Cannot even summit the foothills
looms an invitation

Moved mountains before us
Became a mirage for others portrait

Mountains weren’t sinking into the fall like that
and the mountains re-state themselves inanimate and alive
moving away from every distance gained mapped

and all the scenery escapes.

The leaves could be gone already
swallowed by all the evergreen
sticking out on the hillside, symmetry itself

And out of place

Fall being ahead and behind
Picks up the brightest leaves afore blue sky
Dumps color to contrast evergreens

In coming, it leaves.
