The Colorado Department of Transportation is continuing its rockfall mitigation work in Byers Canyon on U.S. Highway 40 near Hot Sulphur Springs this week.
CDOT officials said motorists should expect 20-minute traffic holds, though some residents are reporting delays of up to 50 minutes. The work will take place from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Thursday, Aug. 28. Grand County Road 20, the Parshall Divide, should not be used as an alternate route for commercial vehicles, according to CDOT.
Once completed, the mitigation work should help prevent rocks from falling onto the highway, officials said.
In March, a rockslide in the canyon caused significant damage to the roadway, causing the highway to close. It was patched the same day, and a more permanent fix is planned for this section of road.
