Rocky Mountain Repertory Theatre has announced it won a record number of Henry Awards, as presented by the Colorado Theatre Guild. The professional theater in Grand Lake was especially honored for its 2024 production of “Come From Away.”

The awards ceremony took place on July 28 at Lone Tree Arts Center in Lone Tree.

This was the 19th annual year of the Colorado Theatre Guild’s Henry Awards, which “celebrate the best in Colorado’s professional theatre community, honoring exceptional performances, innovative direction and outstanding technical achievements,” according to the theater company.

“It’s thrilling to see our work in Grand Lake shine on a statewide stage,” said executive artistic director Michael Querio in a news release. “These awards are a celebration of the entire (Rocky Mountain Rep) family — the actors, designers, musicians, technicians and staff who bring world-class theatre to the heart of the Rockies every summer.”

Rocky Mountain Rep came away from the competition with the most wins out of any company — with seven awards. It won the following awards for “Come From Away”:

  • Outstanding Production of a Musical
  • Outstanding Direction of a Musical: Jeff Duke
  • Outstanding Ensemble Performance
  • Outstanding Choreography
  • Outstanding Lead Performer in a Musical: Luiza Vittuci

During the ceremony, audience members watched musical performances from the nominated shows, including a solo from Vitucci, showcasing Rocky Mountain Rep’s award-winning performance.

“This recognition was especially notable as ‘Come From Away’ bested other high-profile productions statewide, including the Arvada Center’s regional premiere of ‘Waitress’ and the Denver Center for the Performing Arts production of ‘Little Shop of Horrors,'” the company wrote in the release.

Rocky’s other two awards recognized “The Music Man.” Michael Querio won for Outstanding Musical Direction; Mitchell Lewis won for Outstanding Featured Actor in a Musical.

The prestigious Denver Center for the Performing Arts Theatre Company had received the most nominations out of all the companies; Rocky Mountain Rep received the second-most. The Denver-based company was second best during the ceremony, taking home six awards.

The Henry Awards is named for legendary theatre advocate Henry Lowenstein. A panel of “over 100 industry professionals and theater lovers” evaluated 170 productions by 57 companies, eventually selecting Rocky Mountain Rep as a favorite.
