Visitors and locals to downtown Granby can now enjoy the work of Jay Stewart adorning light poles along E. Agate Ave. Installed in September, these colorful banners brighten the town for those driving through or taking a scenic stroll along Grand County official “Main Street.”

According to a news release from Destination Granby, the new banner installation celebrates the town’s ranching, rodeo and agricultural roots.

“The banners capture iconic scenes, from rodeo competitors in action to cattle grazing and a cowgirl on horseback carrying the American flag,” Destination Granby stated.

Stewart is a longtime Grand County photographer with a board range of work, from capturing weddings to beautiful landscapes, to athletes.

“Jay Stewart’s photography beautifully captures the spirit of Granby and our strong ties to ranching and rodeo,” Destination Granby executive director Sarah Cichon stated. “This project is about more than just beautifying our Main Street; it’s about sharing the story of who we are and what makes our community so special.”

Stewart has also collaborated with Destination Granby for its 2024 marketing campaign celebrating this town’s independent culture. He highlighted locally-owned organizations like Sisu Farms, the Moffat Road Railroad Museum and Wheatley Creek Services.

About the banner project

The new light pole banner project was launched earlier this year to showcase local art and photography on Granby’s Main Street.

“I’m always looking to capture the things we see every day in a new light,” Stewart explained. “When you take a moment to stop and look, you realize how magical this place is. My goal is to capture that magic — the stories, the landscapes and the people who call Grand County home.”

The initiative started in June with illustrations by local artist Michaela Cross of whimsical animals. Stewart’s display will be up through the fall.

Destination Granby received a grant funded by Colorado Main Street for the project. Granby is the only Designated Colorado Main Street community in Grand County. This opens the town up to receive funding and resources to revitalize its downtown.

Colorado Main Street is a part of Main Street America, a nationwide organization which helps to lead a grassroots network of over 40 coordinating programs in over 1,200 neighborhoods and communities across the country. These initiatives are committed to building stronger communities through preservation-based economic development and resident-led downtown revitalization.
