On the morning of Sunday, Aug. 24, Rocky Mountain National Park fire crews responded to a small fire in an area above the Mills and Jewel lakes close to the tree line.

According to a news release from the park, crews responded after a visitor reported smoke in the area.

“Due to steep and technical terrain where the fire was located, air resources were requested,” the release states. “… Northern Colorado Helitack dropped buckets of water, dipped from Jewel Lake.”

The Mills Lake trail was temporarily closed during these operations, but has since reopened. The cause of fire is currently undetermined, according to the release.

Throughout the afternoon, rain fell on the fire. Rain is also forecast in the area tonight. According to the park, fire crews will continue to take appropriate suppression efforts.
