10 years ago: Sheriff’s deputies train with wildlife officers for new Grand County boat patrol

Deputies were out on the water in late July 2015, undergoing boat training for the Grand County Sheriff’s Office and preparing for the beginning of their regular patrol duties on the lakes and reservoirs of the High Country. The two Grand County officers were in the Three Lakes region with wildlife officers from Colorado Parks and Wildlife training on the proper procedures and regulations regarding boating law-enforcement. As more deputies receive training on boating law enforcement, locals and tourists can expect a more regular law-enforcement presence on the lakes. Prior to the department’s current efforts to create a boat patrol unit, the waters of Grand County were primarily patrolled by Parks and Wildlife officers.

Audience members representing interests across the Western Slope expressed frustration with the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railway’s offered services during a special meeting put on by the Northwest Colorado Council of Governments in Winter Park on Aug. 6, 1975. Various audience members said the railroad was deliberately discouraging passengers and livestock shippers from using rail service, since neither yielded as much profit as freight like coal. The council of governments has been working on possibilities for future transportation needs in western Colorado, including trying to use the renewal of the railroad’s Moffat Tunnel lease as a lever to force improvements to passenger rail service.
