The first ride of the season for the Winter Park Express train took place Friday, Dec. 19. The seasonal route runs from Denver to Winter Park Resort as part of an Amtrak partnership with the ski area.

Visitors can take an approximately 2 1/2 hour ride from Denver International Airport at 7 a.m. to Winter Park Resort on the train. The train leaves the resort at 4:35 p.m. to return to Denver.

The train is in its second season of expanded service and lower fares, according to a news release from Gov. Jared Polis’ office, and sales have increased 20%.

The project also has support from the Colorado Department of Transportation.

Polis said the Winter Park Express is “a national model” exemplifying the benefits of affordable and accessible passenger rail.

“I’m excited to see the continued growth and popularity of the Winter Park Express this year, helping get Coloradans where we want to go, saving people time and money, and removing traffic and pollution from our highways,” Polis said in the release.

This year, the Winter Park Express will have trips every Friday, Saturday and Sunday through March 29. Trips every Thursday are scheduled to begin Jan. 8.

One-way fares start at $9 for adults and $4.50 for children
