Letter to the editor: Better communication needed on speeding tickets

If you must deal with the Grand County traffic court system, good luck.

I got a speeding ticket, which I’d planned to fight. Simple enough. The officer gave me my ticket. I could pay it or fight. I showed up at the courthouse on my hearing date to fight.

No! The county clerk told me I could take a reduced sentence at this time. I told her I was here to talk to the judge as it stated on my ticket.

No! She wanted me to take the reduced sentence, or I’d have to reschedule for a court date. I’d just driven four hours to come to the courthouse. Let me see the judge.

No! My only option was to reschedule.

My ticket states clearly I have a court date, but apparently not. I let her know I couldn’t be in court in April
as I was traveling for work.

No! Guess what? The entire hearing can be done remotely online or over the phone. That would have been nice to know before I spent eight hours driving to and from my home.

Don’t believe anything the police officer or the courts state on your ticket. It is not true. If you are going to fight your case, call the court immediately and find out the process or you may spend hours wasting your time.

The court doesn’t care nor do you have any repercussions for doing what they officially tell you to do because they move the ball. A full tank of gas in my truck cost me $125. An entire day off from work costs me a whole lot more.

Thanks, Grand County court and clerk. Maybe you could update your tickets to tell people what to expect and not waste people’s time and money.
