A Silverthorne man died Tuesday, June 23, after a boulder fell on him near the Arkansas River in Buena Vista, according to a Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office Facebook post.
The post stated that Paul Frasch, 59, was one of two men working for a moving company who were passing through the area after completing a delivery. They stopped at the “Rapid 5 1/2 Pullover,” a popular camping area, where they had stopped before to have lunch while passing through. While walking back up the trail, Frasch dislodged rocks along the trail and was crushed, the post stated.
Investigators on scene estimated that a boulder that landed on Frasch was at least half a ton. The other man, who had called for help after the incident, had minor injuries from his arms from attempting to help Frasch, according to the post.
The post stated the Sheriff’s Office will continue to investigate the incident.
