Steamboat police arrested a fugitive from Texas at the base area of Steamboat Resort around 1:18 p.m. Wednesday after the U.S. Marshals Service alerted local law enforcement of his whereabouts.

The male fugitive, identified as Isaac Van Marcantel, 23, was described as “armed and dangerous” with an arrest warrant with full extradition out of Texas for aggravated robbery with a street weapon.

Marcantel was described over police radio communications as a 6-foot-tall, Asian/Pacific Islander and non-Hispanic male with shoulder-length black hair. He was arrested at the base area after snowboarding around 1:18 p.m.

Steamboat police received notification from the U.S. Marshals Service around 11:19 a.m., stating that Marcantel was in Steamboat Springs.

A Steamboat police sergeant worked directly with a U.S. marshal on locating Marcantel, said Steamboat Springs Police Chief Mark Beckett.

Police tracked the suspect’s vehicle to a parking garage across from the Sheraton Steamboat Resort Villas, where it was parked on the upper deck, around noon. Non-emergency SWAT resources were asked to respond and set up a perimeter.

When considering when to call in Northwest Colorado SWAT resources, Beckett said he leans toward safety.

“There are a number of things we think of,” Beckett said. “In this case, the main consideration is the fact that he’s a fugitive, the fact that the crime was a violent crime and the fact that he’s believed to be armed … If you’re wanted for a violent crime and there’s intelligence that you are armed, we’re going to deploy a SWAT team almost every time.”

Officers also investigated a home alarm that was triggered around the time that the suspect was in the area. The residence was cleared around 1 p.m. and the alarm was not linked to Marcantel, police said.

By working with Steamboat Ski & Resort Corp. staff, police tracked Marcantel through his Ikon pass, which was scanned at one of the gondolas at Steamboat Resort around 12:04 p.m. Marcantel was wearing a gold jacket and tan pants and was snowboarding, according to law enforcement.

Steamboat police found the suspect at the base area of Steamboat Resort and arrested him around 1:18 p.m. Marcantel then was taken to the Routt County Jail.

“I had two deputies and a couple of my folks walking around the base area, and the two deputies saw him walking and felt like it was him,” Beckett said. “He has long hair, so he’s fairly distinctive. They lost sight of him very briefly near the Christy Sports, and then they ended up seeing him again, and they just walked up to him and arrested him.”
