1 year ago: Injured hiker on Continental Divide Trail is rescued in a 7-hour mission

Grand County Search and Rescue was called out to the Continental Divide Trail near Troublesome Pass and Haystack Mountain on Aug. 31, 2024, after a female hiker sustained injuries. In Facebook post, search and rescue stated that the hiker received first aid from friends but required more care. Once on the scene, search and rescue provided additional first aid and transferred the injured hiker into the care of Grand County Emergency Medical Services. The rescue started at 5:30 p.m. and was completed at approximately 12:20 a.m.

5 years ago: Effort to undo long-standing agreements at Granby Ranch irks homeowners

Granby Ranch’s new owner is undoing the series of agreements with homeowners related to the ski and golf area. In a letter signed by GP Granby Holdings, the company explained that certain agreements would no longer stand and briefly outlined its plans, including an intention to open for the ski season. The letter sent to homeowners Sept. 2, 2020, asserted that a lease purchase agreement with Headwaters Metropolitan District had been terminated at the time of the foreclosure last month. As part of the initial agreement, Granby Ranch property owners paid a one-time $10,000 fee when they purchased their home, entitling them to priority access and special pricing on ski and golf amenities.

10 years ago: About 70 jobs to be cut at Henderson Mine & Mill in response to ‘market conditions’

Portions of Grand, Clear Creek and Summit counties are steeling themselves for a round of layoffs scheduled for the Henderson Mine and Mill. Approximately 70 jobs are expected to be cut from the two industrial operations. Freeport-McMoRan (FCX), which owns Henderson Mine and Mill, issued a press release on Aug. 27, 2015, detailing spending cuts in the company in response to what they call, “market conditions.” Henderson Mill is the largest property taxpayer in Grand County and by far the largest single contributor to the West Grand School District budget.

50 years ago: Robbery at Old Grand Inn results in over $1,200 in losses

A robbery at the Old Grand Inn in Granby Sept. 1, 1975, resulted in losses totaling $1,250, according to Granby Police Chief Howard McGinnis. The receipts from the previous night were stolen, as well as money in the change drawers of seven coin-operated machines and a gun. Fingerprints were taken and will be compared to those of any suspects who turn up. Law enforcement officers in Grand County are searching for clues in a series of burglaries committed in recent weeks in the Granby area.

100 years ago: Hot Sulphur Springs school announces start date and staff

School is set to open once again at Hot Sulphur Springs on Sept. 8, 1925. The local school board definitely engages its staff of three teachers, who will be employed for the 1925-25 school year. Professor R. H. Warren, the principal of the school last year, will again hold the same office as well as serving as the high school instructor. Miss Mattie Hartman, of Kremmling, will teach the intermediate grades and Miss Beatrice Schnoor, of Grand Lake, will teach the primary room. Parents of children who will be enrolled at the school are advised to pupils should be enrolled on the first day and prepared to work at once.
