The Town of Kremmling will welcome a new board of trustees in April 2024. During its Feb. 21 board meeting, town clerk Teagan Serres announced that the April 2 municipal election was canceled, because there were not more candidates than board seats available.

Staff then appointed Wes Howell as mayor. He will serve a two-year term, until April 2026. He has been serving as interim mayor since Grover Pryor resigned in January.

Dave Sammons, Jim Miller and Erik Woog were all appointed as trustees. They will serve four-year terms, until April 2028. Sammons and Miller are both incumbents to the board.

When Howell became interim mayor, his trustee seat became open. Erik Woog submitted his candidate petition for the seat. Since he was the only community member to do so, the town appointed him as trustee to replace Howell. Town staff welcomed Woog into his new role during the meeting as he took his oath of office.

Woog is a familiar face in town government – he previously served as trustee from 2018-2022.

Sammons, Miller and Woog will serve alongside trustees Doug Prewitt, Leo Pesch and Guy Bakke; their seats will be up for re-election in 2026.

The trustees discussed that some years they receive lots of interest in the town board positions; other years, there is not much interest. They expressed that serving on the town board is very intensive and requires lots of work.

According to Serres, the Colorado Municipal League reports that 30-40% of municipalities cancel its elections, because there are not more candidates running than seats available.

During the town’s April 17 meeting, Howell and the appointed trustees will take their oaths of office.
