Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park will be temporarily closing at 6 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 22 due to the forecast for snow and freezing temperatures overnight, according to Kyle Patterson, the park’s public affairs officer.
The closure points will be at Rainbow Curve on the east side and Milner Pass on the west side. Additionally, Old Fall River Road will be closing at 5 p.m. Rangers will assess road conditions in the morning to determine when these points will reopen.
Accumulating snow is expected for the higher mountain elevations late Monday through early Wednesday, Sept. 24, according to a Facebook post from the Denver/Boulder Area U.S. National Weather Service page.
Most of the accumulations will likely impact elevations above 10,500 feet and across the northern mountains with minor accumulations will be possible down to 9,000 feet Monday night, the post stated.
Some roads and passes may be impacted, but confidence in impacts is varied based on storm track and snow levels. Currently, Trail Ridge Road Higher is among the high-elevation northern mountain roads expected to receive impactful snow accumulation levels, with slightly lower confidence for the I-70 corridor. Officials urged the public prepare for potential winter conditions on Berthoud Pass, at the I-70 tunnel and on Loveland Pass from Monday night to Tuesday morning.
Real-time road conditions and traction device requirements are available at maps.cotrip.org and updated information for Trail Ridge Road is available via the recorded status line at 970-586-1222.
