It may feel like spring in Grand County, but at over 12,183 feet, winter conditions still exist. Due to ongoing and forecasted winter weather conditions at higher elevations in Rocky Mountain National Park, Trail Ridge Road will not be opening this Memorial Day weekend.

Since mid-April, snowplow operators have been working on clearing Trail Ridge Road. However, storms hampered snow plowing operations. Storms in mid-May brought additional snow accumulation, strong winds that resulted in deep snow drifts, freezing temperatures and ice.

Currently, Trail Ridge Road is closed to vehicles at the Colorado River Trailhead on the west side and Many Parks Curve on the east side. Those visiting the park should prepare for changing weather conditions, including high wind gusts, snow accumulation, deep snow drifts and ice above the tree line.
