UPDATE: U.S. Highway 40 claims another life in Grand County

Editor’s note: This story was updated on Thursday afternoon to identify the person who died in the crash.
A car accident near the intersection of County Road 5 and U.S. Highway 40 west of Tabernash claimed another life in Grand County on the afternoon of Wednesday, Nov. 19.
Grand County Coroner Tawnya Bailey confirmed the identity of the individual who died in the accident as Ryan Singleton, 45, a resident of Grand County and business owner in Winter Park.
After receiving a report of a driver trapped under a vehicle, authorities arrived on scene to find a single vehicle off the roadway on the westbound side of the highway near mile post 220. The driver was pronounced dead on scene.
The cause and manner of death are currently under investigation by the Grand County Coroner’s Office, in coordination with the Colorado State Patrol.
Both lanes of U.S. 40 were closed around 1:47 p.m. At 1:55 p.m., eastbound traffic was rerouted down County Road 5, before both lanes opened to alternating traffic at 2:05 p.m.
This is the 11th driving fatality of 2025 in Grand County, which is the most in one calendar year since at least 2015, according to Colorado State Patrol records obtained by Sky-Hi News.
“This is a truly heartbreaking incident, and our thoughts are entirely with the family of Ryan Singleton and everyone in our community who has been touched by this tragedy. We extend our deepest condolences during this period of immense sorrow,” Bailey said in a Nov. 20 press release from the coroner’s office.
Singleton was a well-known restauranteur in Grand County who co-owned Smokehouse BBQ and Wooks Burritos and opened Alchemy Pizza in Winter Park in October 2024.
Alchemy Pizza announced it would be closing its doors for now as employees mourn the death, according to a Facebook post.
According to the coroner, no further details regarding the incident are being released at this time to respect the privacy of Singleton’s family and as agencies complete the ongoing investigation.
